Gerard Devoud, a Seychellois artist of great acclaim, has captured the hearts of art enthusiasts not only in Seychelles but also across Europe and the United States. His unique style of painting reflects a powerful expression of emotions and conveys the beauty of the Seychelles archipelago through vivid and lively abstract and naïve sceneries.
Born in 1955, Gerard Devoud discovered his passion for art at a young age when he won a school art competition. This early triumph ignited the spark within him, and he knew from that moment on that he wanted to paint. As a self-taught artist, he honed his skills and developed his distinctive style through dedication and persistence.
At the age of 19, Gerard held his inaugural exhibition at the Pirates Arms Hotel in Victoria in 1974. This marked the beginning of a journey that would take him far beyond the borders of his homeland. Soon after, he ventured to Paris to study plastic art, refining his techniques and expanding his artistic horizons.
In 1976, a significant milestone in Seychelles' history occurred when the country gained independence from Britain. During the festive celebrations, Gerard played a pivotal role in promoting Seychellois art and culture to the world. He generously offered his paintings to important dignitaries and visitors from various countries, effectively putting Seychelles on the international art map.
Embracing his role as a global ambassador for Seychellois art, Gerard embarked on a series of exhibitions in numerous countries. From France to Switzerland, England to Italy, Germany to Belgium, and all the way to the United States, India, Mauritius, and Jersey Island, his artwork left an indelible mark on art lovers worldwide. Notably, his largest exhibition to date was held in Seychelles in 1988, featuring an impressive display of 72 paintings.
While Gerard sells his original paintings, he also makes his art accessible to a broader audience through silk-screen lithographs, which offer more affordable options for art enthusiasts to own a piece of his captivating work.
Presently, Gerard operates his own art gallery at the Valmer Resort in Baie Lazare. This venue serves as a vibrant showcase of his vast collection of paintings that exude the beauty, culture, and everyday life of the Seychelles archipelago. Each artwork comes with an authentic certificate, adding to the value and uniqueness of the pieces.
Situated in the southwest region of Mahe, the Valmer Resort Art Gallery has become a cherished destination for art enthusiasts and visitors alike. The year 1997 brought a special highlight to Gerard Devoud's illustrious career. During the Miss World pageant, several contestants and distinguished personalities were drawn to his artistry and purchased numerous silk-screen pieces. This high-profile recognition further solidified Gerard's status as a renowned artist with a global appeal.
